![]() Windshield Reflection Quality (<1 percent): Unlike the above, the windshield reflection quality doesn't appear to affect performance much at all. Turning this down to medium or high is recommended for midrange GPUs, and turning it off on budget GPUs can help quite a bit. Reflection Quality (9 percent): The single most demanding settings, according to my testing, this affects the quality of reflections primarily on the cars. This is one of the more demanding settings to max out, and dropping to medium is recommended for lower tier GPUs. SSAO Quality (6 percent): Screen space ambient occlusion approximates indirect lighting for nearby surfaces, giving scenes more depth. It's not as good as other forms of AA but can help remove the most visible jaggies. Set to 2x or off on lower tier GPUs.įXAA (3 percent): Fast approximate anti-aliasing is a post-processing filter that attempts to eliminate jaggies. 4x): Multi-sample anti-aliasing requires more VRAM and has one of the biggest effects on performance of the available settings. Static Geometry Quality (<1 percent): Adjusts the level of static geometry, with no measurable change in performance.ĭynamic Geometry Quality (3 percent): Adjusts the level of dynamic geometry (eg, for cars, trees, fences, and other deformable objects), with a minor impact on overall performance. On modern GPUs, this doesn't affect performance much if at all. Motion Blur Quality (2 percent): Adjust the quality of motion blur, with a negligible impact on performance.Įnvironment Texture Quality (<1 percent): Uses higher resolution textures for the environment, which requires more VRAM, though 4GB is enough for ultra. Shadow Quality (5 percent): Improves shadow map resolution and quality, and lower settings cause a noticeable difference in how the game looks. Overall performance in the benchmark improves by 3 percent with this turned off, but only about a third of the benchmark is at night, so during night scenes the actual impact is higher (about 9 percent). Night Shadows (3 percent): Enables shadows cast by headlights and some street lights at night. Relative to 'extreme,' ultra runs about 24 percent faster, high runs 54 percent faster, medium is 65 percent faster, and low is 87 percent faster (give or take a few percent for margin of error).Īnisotropic Filtering (<2 percent): Improves texture clarity, with little to no performance impact on modern GPUs. ![]() Global Preset (110 percent): Going from maximum to minimum quality obviously has the greatest effect on performance. Percentage increases are relative to the 'extreme' settings. I then set each option to the minimum allowed setting and tested performance again. For the following performance estimates, I ran the benchmark sequence using a GTX 1070 Ti at 1440p with all settings at maximum (except MSAA, which I set to 4x). The game includes a built-in benchmark that provides a good idea of real-world performance based on my testing. Several of the settings can be pushed beyond the ultra preset to an 'extreme' level, for those with more potent PCs. There are five presets (very low, low, medium, high, and ultra), and under the advanced settings menu you can adjust the individual items. Thanks, MSI (opens in new tab)!įorza Horizon 4 offers up 19 graphics settings, and as usual many don't cause a significant change in performance and/or visuals. After some time of working there are a few functions from QuoVadis I am missing for now at QMapShack: QMapShack does provide similar functionality. Update: Please see the comment section for explanation of the necessary functions. Also the display of the Garmin map worked perfectly. After rebooting to Linux, I loaded the gpx file into QMapShack and without failure all the tracks and routes showed up, as it can be seen in the above screenshot (click on it to get a bigger version). Next I switched to Windows and exported some tracks from my Japan folder to a gpx file. Connecting the unit and mounting it was already enough to show up in QMapShack, and allowed me to copy the tracks to my local database. Next step was to download a data from my last weekend trip to Yarigadake, Kitakama-ridge (unfortunately we had to turn back due to rain). Getting used to QMapShack is a bit a challenge coming from QuoVadis, but the Wiki help pages allowed a quick start. Fortunately, QMapShack supports Garmin vector maps, the only maps that are (as far as I know) available digitally for Japan. Dealing with GPS units is not a problem, this is the easy part. QMapShack is far from as feature rich as QuoVadis, but as far as I see now, it does have enough features for me and my mountaineering in Japan. So for most of the GPS work I had to reboot my laptop to Windows, do my stuff there, and then switch back to Linux. For some time I had a VirtualBox installation of Windows, but that was more a clutch than anything else. For serious work as a professional it was indispensable for me. I could use the digital raster maps of Austria, Switzerland (SwissTOPO), Germany, France, Italy, as well as Garmin vector maps. While working as mountain guide in Europe it was an essential tool for me. It is extremely feature-rich, and above all it can work with many different maps. QuoVadis is a great program, there is nothing to complain. Let us start with the program I was using since ages, and still are using, QuoVadis. Fortunately, Garmin Maps are supported, and since all my maps regarding Japan are Garmin maps, I am now in the process to converting to QMapShack at least for my Japan GPS data. The one big difference is of course the set of maps one can use with QMapShack. QMapShack is very similar in the target audience, but very different in usage. It only has one disadvantage, it doesn’t work on Linux. QuoVadis is a great program, able to work with various commercial digital maps as well as GPS receivers. I have been using QuoVadis now for many many years, and it contains my mountaineering history all the way back. In one of the comments on my last post on Windows 10, a friendly reader from my home country pointed me at QMapShack as a replacement for QuoVadis. ![]() It is a portable app that can work directly without install, and it does not require any centralized server.
